Bardiya National Park is a popular tourist destination in western region of Nepal. You shall find less settlements around the border of national park. There are few good resorts which make the jungle expedition hassle free. Due to these factors, the park is less spoiled and the nearby surroundings are in its best condition. The jungle safari around the exotic park will be preferred activity to taste wildlife adventure. Yet jungle walk is also possible with experienced guide. The rafting in the Karnali (longest river of Nepal) pushes the exploration of wildlife. You will be able to see different species of birds, endangered Gharials, mugger crocodiles along the banks of the river and if lucky enough Gangetic dolphin can be spotted.
Bardiya National Park is located in far western district of Bardiya which is bordered by Karnali in west. River Babai flows through the national park. Bardiya National Park was established in 1988. The total area of 968 sq. km is enclosed by the park. About 70% of total area is forest with Saal trees and mixture of grassland, savannah and riverine forest. The park provides ideal area for 642 faunal species including 125 species of fishes, 23 reptiles, birds of 407 species etc. The animals include gharials, mugger crocodile, swamp deer, one-horned rhinoceros, Asian wild elephant and Bengal Tiger. Bengal tiger can be considered as the highlighted animal of the park. The conservation strategies and teaming with nearby Banke National Park have contribute to improve tiger’s population over a decades and population of Bengal tiger is increasing. You might be lucky if you spot one of them.
Nearby parks around border regions there are villages inhabited by local ‘Tharu’ community. Tharu are hardworking people who do farming and fishing for their support. You can also explore Tharu cultures and lifestyle. Their warm hospitality surely comforts you in their locality. There is also Tharu museum and crocodile breeding center which provides insight look of Tharu community and information of mugger crocodile and Gharials respectively. The Bardiya National Park invites you to get closer to the nature.
